One of the primary goals of Youth Conference Ministries is to be an ongoing
resource to the local church. We believe that if the church is going to be
renewed,
one of the ways it will happen is through young people who are committed to
Jesus and to their local congregations. Our part in renewal is to encourage
these
young people to be radical disciples of His as well as to provide resources to
youth
workers, pastors, and parents.

Parenting Seminars
Created by Dr. Chap Clark, professor at Fuller Seminary and author of Hurt: Inside the World of Today’s Teenagers, and Dr. Chuck Neder, founder of Fun in the Son and The Great Escape, our parenting seminars deal with parenting in a postmodern world. Cultural, developmental, and spiritual issues are dealt with in new and insightful ways.
As we plan parenting seminars, we like to look at the individual needs of the congregation. It is always helpful to discuss your situation with Dr. Neder to communicate specific areas of potential interest. Please read the below information for a general overview of our parenting seminars, but know that Dr. Neder will work with you to tailor a conference that is most effective for the families in your church.
A typical parenting seminar deals in three areas: adolescent development, adolescent culture, and adolescent spirituality. We seek to give parents a framework by which to understand their children, the world in which they are living, and what is going on with them developmentally. We also try to emphasize that the church should be a partner with parents in the adolescent years.
In light of the above, our parenting seminar is not just for parents of teenagers! It is for newlyweds or parents of younger children as we also deal with the infant and toddler years and how they effect the adolescent years. We are also hopeful that grandparents can attend to help them better understand their role in the family unit...that is, as more than just babysitters! In fact, we are developing a seminar for grandparents about grandparenting in a MySpace world that is offered when requested.
Dr. Neder often does his teaching over the course of a weekend; however, teaching can easily be consolidated to a one day weeknight event. For those looking to a weekend, below is an idea of typical weekend flow.
The schedule usually starts with a Friday night meeting that deals with major stressors in families. It is usually short, an introduction to what we are doing. Saturday morning we can a have men's breakfast to look at “What every man wants to leave as a legacy.” This is an important time as we all know the role of fathers is crucial to the parenting process.
The actual parenting seminar usually runs 2 to 4 hours on Saturday morning. Afterwards, we often have a lunch together. There is, however, an option of having a seminar on depression that Chuck’s wife, Susan Neder, is available to teach. Susan’s seminar is insightful and helpful as too many people personally struggle with depression and suicide or have friends who do. (This can be offered as a women's luncheon). Suicide is the #2 killer of teenagers and it considered almost epidemic among adults. We have found that church is doing very little to address it.
Saturday afternoon is generally free but we can do an optional seminar in this time slot, possibly on grand parenting, conflict resolution or even personal counseling with couples.
Other optional seminars such as Learning to Fight Fairly, Making Marriages that Last, Improving Communication in Families, the Ten Things Kids Wished Their Parents Knew and more. Saturday night we deal with how to move from resentment and anger to forgiveness. Unless our own hearts are released, we cannot be how we were created to be as parents or spouses.
On Sunday morning, Dr. Neder is available to preach or teach in Sunday school as needed.

Dr. Neder is available to speak throughout the year and is willing to travel to most any location. All seminar details including marketing, registration and event set-up are handled by the host church. Honorariums and travel arrangements are not set but depend on the situation and size of the weekend. We want to make this affordable for the church, thus, money will never be a reason we don’t do a seminar.
If you decide that you would like to host a parenting seminar, please contact Dr. Neder at chuck@ycmhome.org or (423) 624-2495 for ideas on marketing your conference to ensure the greatest success. From there we will pray that God will do a mighty work in the lives of parents and their children!
Youth Ministry Builder
At a Family Life Seminar we focus on:
- Communication with the Lord--how do we increase our personal, devotional
walk?
- Communication with ourselves-- how do we develop that interior life that is
strong in the midst of all of life’s hassles?
- Communication with those around us--how do we work and live in peace with
those people who we are most close to?
In these seminars we deal with developing the interior life, developing the
disciplines of life, and understanding the fact that God has a passion to be
with us. We work in areas like conflict resolution, parenting, discipling; all
of which help us grow in our relationships with one another. Want to find out
more? Call Chuck Neder for more information (423-624-2495) or email him at
